American bamboo (Fallopia japonica) is a large, herbaceous perennial plant native to Eastern Asia, including Japan, China, and Korea. It is regarded as one of the most invasive exotic species in North America and several other countries.
The hollow stems, featuring distinct raised nodes, create the appearance of bamboo, although it is not related. American bamboo belongs to the Polygonaceae family and is related to buckwheat; thus, the honey is similar but less intense.
The small cream or white flowers appear in erect racemes that are about 3 to 6 inches long in late summer and early autumn.
Other common names for American bamboo include Japanese knotweed and Himalayan fleece vine. In Chinese medicine, it is known as Huzhang (虎杖), which translates to “tiger stick.”
