Burnt Rock Farm in Huntington VT is hiring for the upcoming growing season. Positions open starting in late April-June, with guarantee work through Thanksgiving. Winter work beyond Thanksgiving might be available as well, though TBD.
We grow ~25 acres of certified organic produce in the beautiful mountains of Huntington, VT, which is located 35 minutes from Burlington and Middlebury. We are a very mechanized farm, and aim for high production and ergonomic efficiency. If you are interested in farming in the sweet spot of mechanization without monotony, this might be the farm for you.
Our crop mix skews towards winter storage crops like potatoes and winter squash, carrots, beets, cabbage, and sweepotatoes, but we grow 4 greenhouses of tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers, as well as sweet corn, greens, brassicas, etc for summer sales. We work hard to have a balanced workload throughout the year, as we want to respect people's lives outside of work.
We run a main-season crew of 7-9 people depending on the month, and are looking for self-motivated folks who like working in a fast paced environment that pushes a lot of food out into our local communities. We supply many local stores, farm stands, food hubs, restaurants, our cooperative multi-farm summer CSA and winter CSA, as well as supplying some larger bulk crops through Deep Root Organic Growers Coop.
The general work schedule in the hot part of summer is 7-3:30, with work often ending closer to 3. The schedule shifts an hour later in spring in fall. No weekends required. Tasks include greenhouse seeding, greenhouse tomato pruning and trellising, transplanting, hoeing, harvesting, wash/pack, and deliveries for those who like to drive.
Experience is not necessary. For those with a few years' experience, we can tailor positions to peoples' skills and interests. Pay commensurate with experience, starting at ~$17-18/hr plus a bonus if one completes the full season. Higher wages available for more skilled applicants.
