Knoll Farm Refuge has diverse groups in residence from mid May through mid October; this may be leaders from around the country doing independent work through our Better Selves Fellowship, a yoga group, an intensive program for a professional organization, or a weekend family celebration or wedding. It is vital to us that we provide the most respectful, thorough and authentic hospitality for everyone who comes.
A central element of all gatherings at Knoll Farm is fire and light. Fires offer a powerful gathering space that beckon people to come closer, share stories, and linger. We also utilize fire at Knoll Farm to create a sense of safety by illuminating our hillside at night. Though simple, this gesture brings light and warmth to what could otherwise be a dark, unfamiliar, even off-putting experience for guests of our Refuge. We take this act seriously because we know how important it is for ensuring our guests’ sense of safety and belonging.
An ideal fire keeper will demonstrate: reliability, clear, consistent communication, initiative, professionalism, and kindness. Because many of the fire tender responsibilities are close to the guest experience at Knoll Farm, this person can expect to interact with guests and should do so in ways that respect and enhance their experience. Previous experience tending fires, while appreciated, is not required.
Job responsibilities include:
- Lighting nightly fires (1-3)
- Turning on solar lanterns (30) that illuminate the path up the hill to the Refuge Village
- When applicable, lighting or replenishing fires for the Refuge sauna and hot tub
- Replenishing wood stockpiles throughout the farm
- Our farm is located on a large, steep hill. This job requires the ability to walk up and down steep terrain as well as the ability to carry armloads of firewood.
- Assisting with dinner dishes and clean up
Schedule: This job begins on May 20th with a two-day staff orientation. The work schedule is arranged around the needs of the retreat calendar, which means days off are not regular. The calendar is usually set by April, although it can always change. It’s necessary to be flexible in this role.
Because our programming needs vary, days on which the fire keeper is requested will fluctuate. When needed, the fire tender can expect to work from approximately 5-8pm. Our Refuge Manager will work with the fire keeper to coordinate availability and Refuge needs. This work is ideal for someone living locally.
