Farmland for a New Generation New York is hosting a 3-part webinar series in May, June, and July, exploring issues related to accessing agricultural land using collaborative and cooperative models. The series is designed for farmers interested in participating in collaborative or cooperative land access projects and for service providers who often advise or coach farmers working on these projects. It will explore

  1. How different models can help mitigate the high cost of land
  2. How to build a successful relational culture in a land access project
  3. How to build personal wealth within a collaborative project.

Session 3: Building Personal Wealth Within a Collaborative Land Access Project

Presenter: Nicole L. Tommell, Cornell Cooperative Enterprise Program & Northeast Cooperative Council

Collaborative efforts often deemphasize building wealth based on the increasing value of land. Therefore, farmers involved in these projects need to proactively plan alternate strategies for building personal wealth.

For this session we define wealth as:

  • quality of life
  • ability to balance work and family life
  • ability to provide adequate support for family’s health, education, and overall wellbeing
  • ability to retire and age comfortably, while leaving something behind for heirs
