The farm kitchen at Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center in East Thetford prepares fresh baked bread, pastries, rolls, cookies, coffee cakes, tarts, quiches, muffins, and scones for the farmstand and Hello Café daily. We highlight our in-season fruits and vegetables and pride ourselves on using local and organic ingredients. 

The Assistant Baker position is for 2-3 days per week, including weekend days if necessary. Additional hours are available, if desired.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparing the morning bake (cookies, muffins, bread)
  • Preparing backstock of doughs (cookie, scones, pie & pizza doughs)
  • Assisting the Lead Baker with pies, teacakes, bars, rolls and other baking tasks
  • Maintaining a clean, neat and organized work station
  • Following all established safety and health inspection protocols

Hours:  Total weekly hours for this position averages to 8 hours per week and may fluctuate between 6 to 10 hours per week. Activities will be scheduled during weekday evening hours between 4-7pm, typically 1-2 evenings per week, primarily from April-June. Position Summary:  Vermont Garden Network oversees a management and support system to deliver garden education programs at selected housing sites, working with residents and housing management to enhance food gardens, provide garden leadership and management support, and teach gardening and related skills tailored to meet the needs of each site. The Regional Garden Coordinator reports to the Garden Education Manager at VGN and works closely with Property Managers to provide support for community gardens at three housing sites in Washington County (Barre, Waitsfield, Warren) and three housing sites in Bristol (in neighboring Addison County).

The Food Hub delivers source-identified local and regional food from over 125 farms and value-added producers to over 280 wholesale customers in Vermont, Western New Hampshire, and Western Massachusetts. Currently, we have trucks on the road for pickups and deliveries 5 days per week. We have an online e-commerce platform for customer ordering and are implementing a new ERP system for administrative control of the sales flow. The Food Hub is experiencing rapid growth and will expand operations, infrastructure, and delivery schedule over the coming year.

 

The Farm to School (FTS) program supports school implementation of food, farm, and nutrition education, strengthening their school nutrition programs. Vermont Harvest of the Month is a program run by Food Connects and two other non-profit organizations in Vermont to promote seasonal eating, encourage nutritious diets, and support the local economy. We provide ready-to-go materials for the classroom, cafeteria, and community that promote the use of local, seasonal Vermont foods. 

Bedded Pack Manure Management Workshop

A well-managed bedded pack facility not only provides comfortable and healthy housing for livestock; it can also provide an alternative to storing and handling manure as a liquid and can provide an organic nutrient source that improves the health and fertility of soils on your farm.

This free one-day workshop will help you understand how to properly manage and maintain a bedded pack facility while maximizing herd health and comfort. NRCS will help you calculate the volume of bedding required and the annual costs to purchase bedding.

Position Overview
Title: Livestock Farmer
Department: Land and Livestock Team
Type: Full time, Seasonal, Non-Exempt, Hourly
Report: Land and Livestock Manager
Location: Philo Ridge Farm in Charlotte, Vermont


This position offers full exposure to all aspects of livestock farming. The Livestock Farmer will work
closely with other members of the livestock team to implement daily livestock moves around the
farm: the planning and execution of a management-intensive grazing operation for our finishing
herd, cow/calf herd, and sheep flock. The Livestock Farmer will also assist in on-farm hay production
and field work, cattle and sheep corralling and sorting, and farm-based maintenance tasks.
This position ideally begins in April and ends depending on organizational needs and candidate
availability. The Livestock Farmer role requires a time commitment of 40 hours per week, and
occasionally more depending on seasonal needs. Housing is available.


Responsibilities
 Morning and afternoon livestock chore routine
 Executing the grazing plan by using temporary electric fencing to move cattle and sheep
 Supporting general husbandry duties for all livestock
 Helping collect and record data for on-farm research projects
 Mucking and cleaning out livestock barns
 Aiding in farm maintenance and land up keep
 Tractor and equipment experience preferred, but not required
 Assisting with farm landscape team as needed


Qualifications
 A strong desire to learn about agricultural systems is essential
 A genuine passion for raising livestock as part of a larger farm operation
 Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop strong working relationships across teams
 Interest in supporting research activities related to soil health and ecosystem services
 Willingness to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills
 Clean driving record and valid driver license
Compensation
Compensation is based on verified experience.
