Job Description:

Gardening assistant for a private residence with extensive perennial garden beds, a formal kitchen garden and substantial edible landscaping crops.  We are in search of a fine gardener/ landscaping assistant to aid the property caretaker in the maintenance of these areas.  The primary role of this position is as a gardener, however, the assistant may be asked to perform occasional property management and farming tasks.  In addition to the primary residence, the gardening assistant will help in the care and maintenance of the landscape at a seasonal lakefront property.  This is a part-time, seasonal position.  The duration of the position is weather dependent, but anticipated to be late April-early November.  This position is for 15-20 hours per week, however, additional hours are available doing trail maintenance or forestry work for the right candidate.  

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Preparing gardens for planting, including soil preparation, raking, composting and mulching.
  • Installing new plantings.
  • Helping to plant annual container gardens. 
  • Assisting with weeding, deadheading and pruning garden beds.
  • Watering newly established plants and kitchen garden.
  • Harvesting fruit and vegetable crops as needed. 
  • Participating in the upkeep and maintenance of the main property at Lilac Ridge along with the lakefront property.  This could include leaf blowing, weed-wacking, barn clean up, fence repair.  
  • Assisting with bringing in and stacking hay.
  • Performing trail maintenance.  
  • Helping with fall clean up of both properties, including leaf pick up, putting away outdoor furniture and winterizing the properties. 
  • Cutting back herbaceous perennials in the fall. 

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • A strong interest in gardening.  A minimum of 1 year of experience.
  • Basic plant and weed ID and basic gardening skills.  
  • A desire to perform physical work outside, even in adverse conditions.
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, squat for long periods and ability to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must be a quick learner and able to work well both independently and with a team.

Head Over Fields (HOF) is a certified organic farm and market located on busy Rt. 7 in Charlotte, Vermont. We are entering our 5th growing season, cultivating 5+ acres of vegetables, flowers and herbs with 2 high tunnels, a caterpillar tunnel and a greenhouse. HOF distributes primarily direct to consumers through our robust roadside farm stand (open seasonally April-November) as well as a 3-season CSA and the Shelburne Farmers Market. Over the winter, we launched a self-serve winter stand for our community to access our winter greens and storage crops during the colder months. We also distribute wholesale and work closely with local restaurants and institutions. Our small but mighty team is passionate about organic farming practices and values being part of an agricultural community.

 

We are looking for several hard-working people to assist Katie Rose and other members of the Field Crew with day-to-day operations associated with vegetable production in the fields. These are seasonal, full-time positions (~40 hrs/week) from April/May-November 2025, however experienced candidates who may be interested in part-time work should still apply. The field crew will report directly to Katie Rose. Ideal applicants will have the following experience and skills:

 

  • 1-2 years experience in vegetable production alongside genuine interest in a career in agriculture
  • Commitment to working a full farm season, into November 2025
  • Strong physical and mental work ethic, self-awareness and sense of pace
  • Creative problem-solving skills with ability to multi-task
  • Capacity to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate and work well with others 
  • Willingness to give and receive feedback
  • Organized with the ability to maintain clean workspaces
  • Experience/interest in farm operations with diversified markets and outlets; specific interest in direct-to-consumer markets is a plus
  • Independent-worker with the maturity and drive to identify and solve challenges 
  • Desire to join a small, fast-growing team and farm business with lots of opportunity to grow with it!

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in all aspects of vegetable, herb and flower production, from seed to sale (propagation, transplanting, weeding/hoeing, pest management, harvesting, wash/pack, post-harvest handling, distribution, etc.)
  • Regular meetings with Owner & Manager
  • Adherence to farm safety protocols demonstrating care for the land, tools and equipment
  • Record keeping: maintain accurate harvest logs, personal timesheets, crop records, etc.
  • Desire to work efficiently, openly communicate, ask questions and maintain a positive attitude
  • CSA support (packing CSA boxes, staffing weekly pick-up, deliveries, etc.)
  • Wholesale deliveries
  • Farm Stand support as needed

 

Compensation:

$16+/hour DOE

The school garden coordinator manages all aspects of the TA gardens and orchards and oversees our campus-wide composting system.This position provides for a flexible schedule for classroom collaborations, school-wide programming, and seasonal priorities.
